Installing a smart toilet seat is genuinely DIY-friendly — but the failure mode is buying first and discovering later that your bathroom is not compatible. Run these six checks in 15 minutes before you order.
1. Confirm a GFCI outlet within 4 feet
Almost every electric bidet seat comes with a 4-foot power cord. If your nearest outlet is farther, you need an electrician to add one — or choose a non-electric bidet attachment instead.
2. Check your toilet bowl shape
Smart seats come in elongated and round sizes. Measure from the seat mounting holes to the front of the bowl: 18.5″ = elongated, 16.5″ = round. Many flagship seats are elongated-only.

Standard US toilets use a 3/8″ supply line. Bidet seats include a T-valve that splits this line — they almost always fit, but if you have an older 7/8″ line you may need an adapter.
4. Measure the seat mounting space
Look at the back of your toilet bowl. Smart seats need 5.5″–6.5″ of clear space between the mounting bolts and the tank. If your tank sits closer, the lid may not clear it.
5. Confirm GFCI, not just any outlet
By code, any outlet within 6 feet of a sink in a US bathroom should already be GFCI. Press the “Test” button on the outlet — if it clicks and power cuts, it is GFCI. If nothing happens, get one installed before bidet seat day.
6. Decide on smart-home before you order
Wi-Fi smart bidets require stable 2.4GHz Wi-Fi in the bathroom. Walk into your bathroom with a phone, open the Wi-Fi list, and check signal strength. If it is one bar or “fair,” step down to a non-Wi-Fi model.
