Caroma Smart Toilet Review: What “Smart” Really Means

Caroma's "Smart" toilets in the US are water-saving dual-flush models, not electronic bidet toilets. Here's what the Sydney Smart II and Caravelle Smart offer, from Caroma's specs.

If you’re searching for a “Caroma Smart toilet” expecting a heated seat and a built-in bidet, you’ll be surprised. In the US, Caroma’s “Smart” toilets are water-efficient dual-flush toilets with no electronics. Caroma USA’s current lineup includes the Sydney Smart II and several Caravelle Smart and Somerton Smart models. The models we checked use a 1.28 / 0.8 gpf dual flush and what Caroma describes as an extra-large trapway.

This review is based on Caroma USA’s product pages and documentation. We have not physically tested any Caroma toilet. You can read how we research products on our methodology page.

Status as of November 2026: Caroma USA’s site (caromausa.com) lists the Sydney Smart II one-piece toilet, the Sydney Smart back outlet toilet, Caravelle Smart one-piece and two-piece models, and two Somerton Smart suites. We couldn’t find an electronic or bidet toilet on Caroma’s US site. Caroma does sell bidet toilet suites in Australia, but we couldn’t find them offered in the US.

What “Smart” means at Caroma

Caroma doesn’t define the word on its product pages, but it uses “Smart” for several features on its US toilets:

  • Smart Connect: an installation system with an adaptor. Caroma says it lets the toilet fit a rough-in anywhere from 10 to 12 inches and installs without drilling into the floor.
  • Smart Glaze: a “nano” glaze that Caroma says helps with cleaning and hygiene. It’s listed on the Caravelle Smart.
  • Dual flush: every Smart model uses a full and a half flush to save water.

That makes “Smart” a water-saving and installation label, not a technology label. These toilets don’t need power and have no bidet functions. If you came here looking for an electronic toilet, our explainer on what a smart toilet is covers the difference.

Caroma Sydney Smart II at a glance

The Sydney Smart II is the one-piece model in Caroma USA’s Smart range, so it’s the clearest example of what the line offers.

Key points from Caroma’s product page:

  • Dual-flush lever. Push down for a full 1.28-gallon flush, pull up for a 0.8-gallon half flush.
  • Large trapway. Caroma describes a fully glazed trapway about twice the industry-standard size and calls it “virtually uncloggable.” That’s the manufacturer’s claim.
  • MaP Premium at 1,000 grams. MaP (Maximum Performance) is a third-party flush-performance test, and Caroma lists the Sydney Smart II as MaP Premium certified at 1,000 grams.

  • Soft-close seat included (Caroma part 326202).

What we like

  • 1.28 / 0.8 gpf dual flush saves water and is WaterSense labeled
  • Caroma describes an extra-large fully glazed trapway
  • MaP Premium rated at 1,000 grams
  • Smart Connect adapts to a 10 to 12 inch rough-in without floor drilling
  • No electricity needed and nothing electronic to fail
  • 5-year limited warranty on the vitreous china

Things to consider

  • Not a smart toilet in the electronic sense: no bidet, heated seat or auto flush
  • Range and availability are narrower than the big US brands
  • Caroma USA's site gives limited dimension details on some pages

Who it’s for

  • Water-conscious homeowners who want a dual flush with a 0.8 gpf half flush.
  • Anyone tired of clogs who wants a wide trapway. Caroma’s large-trapway design is the line’s main selling point.
  • Remodelers with an awkward rough-in. Smart Connect’s 10-to-12-inch range gives some flexibility.
  • Buyers who want to add a bidet seat later. A plain elongated bowl like the Sydney Smart II can usually take an electric bidet seat if there’s an outlet nearby. Check the seat maker’s fit guide first.

It’s not for you if you want built-in washing, a heated seat or hands-free features. For that, look at an integrated smart toilet in our best smart toilets shortlist.

What to check before you buy

  • Your rough-in. Measure from the finished wall to the center of the drain bolts. Smart Connect covers 10 to 12 inches. Our measuring guide walks through it.
  • Outlet type. Floor drains suit most Smart models. If your drain comes out of the wall, look at the back outlet versions.
  • Local stock. Caroma may be harder to find locally than the biggest US brands. Confirm availability with a dealer or Caroma USA before you schedule an installer.
  • Seat fit if you plan to add a bidet seat. Caroma bowls have their own shapes, so check a bidet seat’s compatibility with the exact model.
  • Warranty terms. Caroma lists 5 years on vitreous china (effective August 12, 2025), 3 years on mechanical parts and 2 years on the included seat.

Caroma Smart vs an electronic smart toilet

The naming overlap causes real confusion, so here is how the two kinds of “smart” compare in practice.

Caroma Smart (e.g. Sydney Smart II) Electronic smart toilet
Power needed No Yes, usually a GFCI-protected 120V outlet
Built-in bidet wash No Yes
Heated seat and dryer No Usually
Flush Manual dual flush, 1.28 / 0.8 gpf Varies; often automatic, sometimes pump-assisted
Parts that can fail Flush valve and seat Flush parts plus heaters, sensors, pumps and control boards
Installation Standard toilet install Toilet install plus electrical planning

For many households, the practical middle ground is a water-efficient toilet plus an electric bidet seat. You get the low flush volumes of a toilet like the Sydney Smart II and the washing, warmth and drying of a seat, and if the seat ever fails you replace only the seat.

If you wanted an electronic smart toilet

Many people who search for “Caroma Smart” actually want a toilet with a built-in bidet. If that’s you, these guides will help:
